Our Partners
Our partners spend over £1.2 billion annually on research across more than 30 locations in the UK.

• The Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC)
funds research that is aimed at increasing human understanding of how
living organisms function and behave - from the level of individual
molecules and cells to populations and ecological systems - and at
providing knowledge that can be used to develop new technologies and
products for medicine and industry, and for better management of
natural resources. |

• The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) is
one of Europe's largest multidisciplinary research organisations
supporting scientists and engineers world-wide. It operates world-class
large-scale research facilities, provides strategic advice to the
government on their development and manages international research
projects in support of a broad cross-section of the UK research
community |
• Central Science Laboratory (CSL) CSL
is an Executive Agency of the UK Government Department for Environment
Food and Rural Affairs. They specialise in the sciences underpinning
agriculture for sustainable crop production, environmental management
and conservation and in food safety and quality. Arising from the
research they carry out is a wide range of analytical, diagnostic and
consultancy services designed to support the international land-based
and food industries.

• The Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) is
the centre of scientific excellence for the UK Ministry of Defence,
housing one of the largest groups of scientists and engineers in public
service in the country
• Health Protection Agency (HPA). The HPA's role is to provide an integrated approach to protecting UK public health with a broad
range of specialist services for health protection and public health,
covering infectious diseases, radiation and chemicals. In carrying out
its health protection functions the Agency undertakes R&D from the
very small (molecular) to the very large (population) across all three
of these key areas. |

• Macaulay Land Use Research Institute (Macaulay).
Founded in
1930, the Macaulay Institute is an international centre for research
and consultancy on the environmental and social consequences of rural
land uses. Interdisciplinary research across the environmental and
social sciences aims to support the protection of natural resources,
the creation of integrated land use systems, and the development of
sustainable rural communities. With an annual income from research
and consultancy of over £11M, the Macaulay Institute is the largest
interdisciplinary research organisation of its kind in Europe. |
• The Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) provides
independent research and training in the environmental sciences. Their
mission is to gather and apply knowledge, improve understanding and
predict the behaviour of the natural environment and its resources.

• National Physical Laboratory (NPL) NPL
is the United Kingdom's national standards laboratory, an
internationally respected and independent centre of excellence for
R&D, and knowledge transfer in measurement and materials science.
• The Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council (PPARC)
is the UK's strategic science investment agency. By directing,
coordinating and funding research, education and training in particle
physics and astronomy, PPARC delivers world-leading science,
technologies and people for the UK.
• Scottish Crop Research Institute (SCRI)
SCRI is situated in Invergowrie on the
north bank of the River Tay, in a first class agricultural area to the
west of Dundee. Research focuses on processes that regulate the growth
of plants and their responses to pests, pathogens and the environment.
It includes genetics to breed crops with improved quality and
nutritional value as fast as possible. By understanding the plant's
responses to pests and diseases and how they react to the soil, air and
water around them, environmentally friendly and sustainable methods of
protecting crops from the ravages of pests, diseases and weeds are
developed. |
• The United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA),
at the Culham Science Centre, is the home of the UK fusion research
programme which is funded jointly by the UK Engineering and Physical
Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and by EURATOM.

• Veterinary Laboratories Agency (VLA)
VLA is internationally recognised as a
centre of excellence in veterinary research. They provide a wide range
of applied research and consultancy, diagnosis and surveillance on
livestock diseases to Government and commercial customers. VLA is a
reference laboratory for many farm animal diseases. | |
